Microsoft Getting a Bad Wrap on Packaging?

By now, everyone has seen the spoof on YouTube teasing Microsoft’s packaging habits, and mocking the company using a fictional redesign of the Apple iPod box. If you haven’t seen it, here it is:

The spoof above is over two years old. And in that time, I think Microsoft has done a better job at packaging their product. Just take a look at their case for Vista. Microsoft has slowly, over time, gotten to this point.

I don’t think the casing is bad, and I rather like it. It is much cleaner than their earlier brands, and that’s a good thing. I’m not sure if I’m liking the big ol’ Windows Vista icon though. It looks like it was an afterthought.

I remember first seeing the Microsoft packaging and being like oooh pretty. The shape makes it much more interesting. (I think they one a Pentagram packaging award for these…?) Open it is also fun the way it slides out to the right. But the clasp isn’t completely intuitive and the one I have at work is tricky to open you have to pinch and pull it at the same time in just the right way. So, much improved but still something to desire.

Yeah, I wouldn’t say Microsoft has nailed it, but it’s still way better than anything else they’ve ever done!
