Magazine Cover Blunder

A quick run to the grocery story yesterday found me waiting in line for an extended amount of time. Bored at the prospect of spending half an hour in a line, my eyes wondered to the magazines perched on both sides of the aisle. To my left, OK magazine. To my right, US Weekly. At first, I thought my eyes were deceiving me in some way. But thankfully, I hadn’t gone mad. But someone at one of the magazines’ headquarters sure did.

So, which portrait is the original? To my eye, the OK magazine cover looks to be more natural. The US Weekly cover just looks flipped to fit the layout of the cover. Even more interesting, the color scheme is the same for both magazines: pink, white and yellow. And yes, US Weekly took it upon themselves to slim down Mrs. Palin’s face.

So, which magazine is doing the ripping?

I don’t have much experience with purchasing portraits for magazine covers. Usually, I hire a photographer and art direct the session. If I were to ever find myself needing to purchase a photo for a magazine that was distributed globally, I’d make darn sure that I got exclusive rights. Especially if it is going to be sitting on a magazine rack next to my competitors.

I would have to agree with you that the US magazine photograph looks more touched up then the OK magazine. It is funny how closely the two magazine resemble one another! The US magazine doesn’t have that “real” feel to it like the OK magazine does. It’s also funny how they do have the same colors as well, but are used a little differently. So I believe that the US magazine is doing the ripping.

One other modification by US Weekly that I noticed is that they Photoshopped out the wall (?) in the background. It is grey or light blue in the OK cover, but all yellow in the US Weekly cover. If you look closely, though, above the baby’s head, at the very corner of both covers, you can see some pink (possibly Palin’s fingers). It looks strange in both photos though, and I probably would have taken it out.

I saw that US Weekly cover tonight at the grocery store and was very disturbed. It’s amazing how they sensationalized everything from the title to the fact that her daughter is 17 and pregnant and that Trig has down syndrome. I just prefer that OK was more referential rather than screaming the gossip from the cover. I mean if people don’t know what it means that Palin is “standing by her daughter” and “the truth about Trig” (without being obscenely specific like US) than people are not getting enough news in their lives.

And I concur that the OK cover image appears more natural.

Yup. OK looks more natural. Somebody’s getting a tongue lashing (or worse) at one (or both) of those magazines!
